Human resources management (HRM) is a cross-functional function within a company that we are all familiar with, but which we often confine to the administrative management of personnel, the issuing of pay slips, employment contracts or the recruitment of new employees. However, human resources and the tasks of an HR department are much broader. Let's take a look at this subject in more details.
What is human resources management?
Formerly known as "personnel management", human resources management or the management of a company's human capital now refers to all practices related to personnel administration, employee mobility and HR development in the broadest sense. In summary, the tasks of the HR function can be divided into five main areas.
Staff remuneration
One of the best-known tasks of the HR department is to develop and implement the company's or organisation's remuneration policy together with the general management. This is the result of a balance that must be struck between the cost of the wage bill, employee motivation, recognition of their work and the need to develop.
Recruiting new employees
The second essential task of a human resources department is to support the search for new employees, to take charge of the induction of new employees and to ensure that the recruitment process is in line with the company's HR policy.
Forward-looking management of jobs and skills
The development of human resources must be considered in the medium or long term. An HR department must therefore anticipate the company's future needs and plan the development of internal skills, thanks to an employee training plan and career management over several years.
Improving working conditions
Until a few years ago, this often came down to the prevention of work-related accidents and physical illnesses. Today, when one in five employees say that their health has deteriorated because of stress at work, the prevention of psycho-social risks is much more important. Today, the Labour Code (Article L. 4121-1) states that the employer must take all appropriate measures to protect the physical and mental health of its employees, and this obligation is generally placed under the responsibility of the HR department.
Managing social dialogue
The HR department plays an essential role in maintaining a social climate. Dialogue with staff representatives must be maintained and cover subjects as varied as the company's growth, internal communication, employee well-being, CSR, changes in labour law, etc. The HR department of a company must also ensure that negotiations are conducted in accordance with the legal obligations.
Some examples of human resources jobs
Here is an overview of the human resources jobs that a professional can do after a few years of study and/or professional experience.
The Human Resources Director (HRD)
The HRD, or human resources manager, is responsible for developing the overall HR policy of a company or organisation, in close collaboration with general management, and for implementing it. The size of the HR department depends on the size of the company. In large companies, it may involve several dozen employees.
The HR assistant
As the job title indicates, the HR assistant carries out various administrative tasks under the authority of an HR manager or HR director, delegated by his or her line manager. These range from managing pay slips to drawing up declarations to staff representative bodies and monitoring employee files (contract amendments, taking leave, distributing luncheon vouchers, etc.). The scope of his or her duties will depend on the size of the company and the composition of the HR department.
The recruitment manager
In a company, the main task of the recruitment manager, or sometimes the development manager, is to support managers and department directors who are recruiting new employees. They may be responsible for drafting and distributing advertisements, carrying out an initial screening of the applications received, monitoring ongoing recruitment and conducting interviews.
The training officer
The role of the training officer or manager is to support employees in developing their skills. In other words, he or she is in charge of internal talent management and acts as a reference for employees who want to train and for managers who want to improve the skills of their teams.
